hero--SMOSHing it with West Lakes Footy Club

Green Leaves Early Learning is a proud sponsor of the SMOSH West Lakes Football Club. SMOSH, as it’s known by the locals, stands for Saint Michaels Old Scholars, Hindmarsh (S.M.O.S.H.). Founded in 1930, the Club is recognised as a leader in amateur footy culture boasting five senior teams, including women’s Division 1 teams, and 13 Junior age groups, and AusKick.

The Club plays at Jubilee Reserve which is a mere 2.5km (5 minutes’ drive) from Green Leaves West Lakes. SMOSH has a fantastic junior program, which delivers on the philosophy of ensuring the club is welcoming to all with activities that are fun, engaging and encourage personal development. Matches are modified with unique rules and reduced squad numbers to ensure all participants enjoy their time playing football irrespective of ability. Their coaches are accredited, with an interest in ensuring all children and their families have enjoyable experiences with the club.

Over the years, SMOSH nurtured a successful Division 1 Women’s team. This vision stemmed from the amazing work the junior club did with developing girls’ footy from U14 – U18. As luck would have it, an opportunity arose when a number of female players from neighbouring clubs were displaced. They were recruited by SMOSH to form the Club’s inaugural all-women’s team. Working with the men’s team, the Women’s team enlisted AFL Hall of Fame Port Magpie legend, Greg Phillips, as their coach. Greg was approached as he was part of the Club’s community when his young daughter, Erin Phillips OAM, played in the U9 team. Erin is a talented midfielder and AFLW’s most decorated player with 50 goals to her name, and Port Adelaide Football Club’s Captain.

The Club is passionate about player development and is committed to a long and bright future for its players and camaraderie within its local community. Throughout the season, the Club often holds various social and fundraising events to strengthen connections within the Club and members of the community. Green Leaves West Lakes is looking forward to welcoming players from SMOSH to their centre.
