Learning Through Play: STEAM Activity – Melting Ice

This activity encompasses science, water play and fine motor development – not to mention a whole lot of fun. It’s simple to prepare, versatile and entertaining for the children.

What you need

  • Spray bottle filled with water, salt and a bit of watercolour to add interest
  • Toys (optional)

Method

  1. Start by freezing some ice cubes. You can also add objects of interests such as toys, flowers, or pom poms (anything you have on hand) and freeze them in large containers such as ice cream containers.
  2. When frozen and ready for play, place the ice cubes on a large tray.
  3. Fill spray bottle with water and salt. Watercolour is optional to add colour.
  4. Ready for play! Spray away!

How does this work? Well, salt can make the ice melt faster. Ice melts at a specific temperature called the melting point. Salt melts ice essentially because adding salt lowers the freezing point of the water.

How does this help with the development of fine motor skills? Using the trigger on the spray bottle helps strengthen your hand and finger muscles. Developing fine motor skills is critical for accomplishing so many lifelong skills, from writing to buttoning a shirt, and tying your shoelaces.
