Recipe: Gingerbread Cookie Jars
The children at Green Leaves Oceanside have been getting into the spirit of Christmas with these Gingerbread Cookie Jars. They make for a great gift idea for Educators, Secret Santa or even a fun Christmas baking activity for the children in the lead-up to the festive season.
Ingredients:
2.5 cups plain flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon mixed spice
1 teaspoon baking soda
Ingredients to be added to the jar once gifted:
125g softened butter
1/2 cup golden syrup
1 egg yolk
What you need:
1. Purchase some Christmas-themed jars from your dollar shop, or use your collection of old jars.
2. Sanitise jars in hot water (assistance from a grown-up required)
3. Ribbons, twine, or even fabric remnants (Christmas-themed would be perfect!)
4. Layer the dry ingredients in the jar.
5. Print a recipe card listing the ingredients required to complete this activity and the method. For example:
Combine softened butter, golden syrup and egg yolk in a mixing bowl. Mix until light and fluffy before adding the dry ingredients to form a dough. Roll out the dough and cut into different shapes with cookie cutters of your choice. Lay them on a piece of baking paper on the baking tray. Bake at 170 degrees for 12 minutes until golden in colour. Cool on a baking rack and sprinkle with icing sugar if preferred.
6. Complete the gift by tying your ribbon around the jar, along with the recipe card.
